Home: The Most Despised Room in Our Home
Why was our master bathroom the most despised room in the house? Well upon entering the bathroom your eyes were gently attacked by the fact that the wall(s) and “tile” countertops were mauve. As the head slowly scanned down, yellow wood cabinets with the cinnamon bun handle pulls seemed to, um, compliment? the stunning (no, really I was actually STUNNED) purple marmoleum flooring.
After seeing this at our inspection, my head jolted upward and eyes darted back and forth from the 90’s plastic shower insert to the silver and gold towel bar directly above the toilet. What is that in place of a traditional toilet seat? Ahhh yes, a bidet from Costco that is made for an elongated toilet bowl but is instead hanging off the side of a very normal sized seat. A strangers bidet is in our newly purchased home? What a perfect housewarming present…
We moved in and three days later, I decided the quickest way to give the room some sort of calm would be to paint the cabinets/trim white and change the color of the mauve wall to a grey we had leftover from our previous home. Switching out the handle pulls, remove the mismatched hooks, toilet paper, and towel holder would further along the process. I must say this did bring some calm to the space visually until we felt inspired enough to start round one of transforming the room.
The first order of business became the sliding glass door and shower head. The original bathroom owners were quite short in comparison to our 6 ft+ frames so the 5.5 ft door to the shower did nothing to prevent the air from attacking us while naked in the shower. It was FREEZING no matter how hot you had the water and it truly made showering a miserable experience. For a person who goes to the shower to reset when I’m in a funk, this was not OK.
We pulled the door down put up a simple white waffle curtain, liner and a new shower head. It is amazing what a difference those simple changes made. The curtain is an extra long coming in at 84” tall which allows the air to actually heat up and keeps the steam in place so icicles are no longer hanging from our noses whilst showering. (We plan to tile the shower and add a floor to ceiling glass door for round two of renovations in here.)
Next was painting the counter top. I decided a white painted counter for the time being was better than a mauve one, even if it ends up getting dinged up. I put three coats of the same white used for the cabinet and then three coats of polyurethane to protect the paint. We’ve been living with it for three weeks now and there are no scratches! (Round two reno will see this countertop changed out and sinks replaced.)
For the walls we decided on Sherwin Williams Anonymous and a gallon coming in at $70 blew me away, but we painted two coats on all walls and the ceiling with a remaining half gallon left. I would say its a pretty good bang for the buck. Also, I am just IN LOVE with the color. It brought a calming affect to the space that it so desperately needed.
I decided to paint all the outlet covers the same as the walls to let them melt into the space with the excepting of the light switch cover. I found a stunning one from houseofantiquehardware.com, ordered it and two days later this beautiful piece of aged metal is proudly displayed on the wall. It adds such a beautiful piece to an otherwise outdated medicine cabinet.
I continued with the open shelving concept in this bathroom and found these at Target. I really love the light wood grain compared to the darker walls/ceiling. After shopping in our #shelfie supplies bins, I stopped at a few local boutiques to add the finishing touches with the print of Crater Lake, beautiful pottery, candle, room spray and hourglass. Dried greenery is from Hobby Lobby and the frame was thrifted.
All in all this space is now a calm, welcoming environment that allows us some time before feeling the need to do a second round of renovations. I’m quite ok with a purple floor when the rest of the space is cohesive!
